Green Wedding Certifications
Version 1.3
INSTRUCTIONS: This is a self-completed, green wedding certification program. It can be used as a planning tool or a final certification document. It does not need to be filed with anyone. It should be placed with your wedding memory album or documents. This form allows you to rate your wedding on a scoring system designed by the Live Green, Live Smart Institute. The system was developed by researching the green weddings of thousands of couples and by reviewing other types of certification programs in the green space. It is designed to help you determine how much you have reduce your footprint on the earth and direct your celebration toward actions and activities that are considered by major global organization initiatives to be socially responsible. By completing this form you will earn the right to use the prestigious International Green Wedding Logo (The Lotus Logo, which can be downloaded at www.livegreenlivesmart.org) on anything related to your wedding. By using this logo on everything from web sites, announcements to wedding programs you are telling your family, friends and the community about your commitment to the environment. Begin by reviewing each category (example: Number of Guests). Read the item sections directly below the category and decide which items most closely identify with what you have planned or have completed. In most categories you can check off one or more items, this is OK. Sometimes you will find that you have similar items in different categories (example: Beverage bottles were / will be recycled), it is OK to check off these items in each category. Sometimes you will not have any activity in a category. When this happens you can check off the item that says you are not doing anything (example: Under the Category Transportation & Travel you select: No transportation is required, Under Rings you select: Take this as an offset credit if no rings are being exchanged). Both of these examples allow you to get points toward the certification without penalizing you because you did not participate in the category. Some couples refer to themselves as spouses, partners, couples or life partners, some cultures refer to the bride and groom with different terms. Please substitute these terms, as you need to fit your terminology for the other person. Cross out the term in use and add your term if you are more comfortable doing this. If you or the couple is disabled or have / has a specific requirement that is not addressed in this form try to think of green initiatives that benefit you and the environment and list them in the innovative credits section. You may not know the answers to many of the questions. If you do not, leave the action item or category blank. Ask your planner, caterer, florist, or any provider for help, look for labels that define the product, use the Internet. If you find later on that you need more points to certify your wedding go back to those sections and dig a little deeper to get points. This certification program is as much about education as it is about creating a green wedding. Don't “chase the points”, just do the best you can filling out this form. Once you have selected the item that fits your action or activity, circle that item or put a check mark next to the item, so you have a record of it. Next, in the space that says TOTAL POINTS, add up all your category points and put them in that section. When you have completed all categories add up all the TOTAL POINTS scores from category number 1 to number 24. This is your GRAND TOTAL. Write that number in the space called grand total. Next, look at the rating scores section called Green Wedding Certification Level. By looking at your grand total score you can identify the certification level of your wedding. You are going to be certified only when your grand total score reaches a total number of 35 points or more. At this time you have rated a Silver level wedding. When your score reaches 70 points you will have rated a Gold level wedding, when your score reaches 110 points you will have achieved the highest rating possible which is the Platinum level wedding. About the Lotus Blossom symbol: Lotus Blossoms are a universal symbol of enlightenment, awareness and purity. Although some cultures use the symbol in religious events, they are actually a non-denominational symbol, they transcend religious and cultural barriers, are cultivated around the world and used in almost every type of wedding ceremony or reception across the globe. We are sensitive to using precious metals to define levels of achievement. Precious metals are however, a universal grading standard, which is well understood.
