The Top 5 Cheapest Places To Live In Australia

What are the most beautiful places to live in the world? There are plenty that one could name, but for myself personally, Australia tends to come to mind. But it’s a name that makes me falter too, because it also happens to be quite an expensive country. Luckily enough, that’s the very reason we’re looking at a guide of sorts today – looking to the cheapest and most affordable places to live in Australia.

Newcastle

Newcastle is a strange case, as it’s the only option on the list where property outside of the city centre will cost more than inside the centre. A single bedroom apartment in Newcastle’s city centre would end up costing you a monthly fee of around 1,378.70 A$, where one outside the centre will average more around 1,430.43 A$. A good city if you’re looking for a more urban lifestyle, but otherwise, it marks the beginning of the list.

Hobart

The capital of Australia’s island state of Tasmania is Hobart. According to Numbeo, a single bedroom apartment near the city centre here will end up costing you somewhere around 1,437.09 A$ a month. Much cheaper would be a single bedroom apartment outside the city centre, which will average at around 1,158.44 A$ a month. This of course doesn’t factor in the utilities.

Cairns

Coming up third is Cairns, often thought of as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. This is a city found in the tropical Queensland, and is just about as gorgeous as it sounds. City centre monthly rent for a single bedroom apartment will end up costing you an average of 1,320.00 A$. Outside the centre it’s the much more affordable 1,158.99 A$. When buying property here, you get the benefits of tropical weather, breathtaking views of distant hills and cliffsides, and of course… the joy of living by the ocean. The best option on the list for lovers of the beach.

Wollongong

Next up on the list is Wollongong, the coastal city found South from the infamously expensive Sydney. Unlike Sydney, you’ll find this city quite affordable, with single bedroom apartment prices typically at around 1,322.00 A$ on average near the city centre. As per usual, these cheapen outside the city centre (unless you’re in Newcastle – which again, is just plain weird) where you’ll find single bedroom apartments going for an average of 1,112.50 A$ a month. Purchasing property here tends to get easier by the year.

Adelaide

You’ll find Adelaide on multiple lists for the cheapest places to live in Australia. Out of all of Australia’s cities, it’s the cheapest to live in and purchase property at. It’s got a good mixture of affordability and metropolitan beauty. Finding a single bedroom apartment in the city centre here will average you around 1,396.19 A$ a month, where a similar apartment outside the centre would be closer to around 1,016.11 A$. Not a bad option at all, if what you’re looking for is something affordable and modern – a tough combination to come across.
